Why does my cat follow me everywhere?

Read time: 1.5 mins

A lot of the time, cats are portrayed as super independent creatures who want nothing to do with us most of the day, unless food is involved. But actually, we’d argue this to be pretty inaccurate. In fact, many kittens spend their days following their owners from room to room and dancing around their ankles. If this sounds familiar, read on to find out five reasons why your cat might be following you everywhere:

Hunger

One of the most likely causes of your cat-shaped shadow is hunger. Cats looking for their next meal tend to stick by your side until dinner is served, and can you blame them? They know you’re in charge of meal times so will keep a close eye on you until they get the goods.

Missing You

If it tends to be that your cat follows you around once you’ve arrived home from work or a long trip out of the house, it could simply be the sweet reason that they missed you. Separation anxiety is pretty common in our pets, especially since lockdown where our floofs got so used to having us around 24/7. They may just feel a little uneasy with you being out of the house, so following you around is just a little reassurance for them after being alone.

Curious Cats

Cats are infamous for their innate curiosity as a species. Following you from room to room could be a way to keep themselves entertained if they’re getting a little bored of snoozing in the sun. Our felines are nosey by nature, so finding out what you’re up to and observing keeps them busy and interested. If you do think your favourite friend could be a little bored around the house though, be sure there are plenty of toys and scratching material around.

Attention Seeking

Unfortunately, if you notice your cat following more often than usual it could be a sign that something is wrong and they’re trying to get your attention. Maybe something spooked them or they’re feeling unwell. Cats might cling to their owners as a way to try and communicate that something isn’t right. Keep an eye out for other signs and symptoms that may indicate your cat isn’t feeling 100% and never hesitate to call the vet if you suspect anything could be wrong.

Best Friends

The best explanation you could wish for is that your cat follows you simply because you’re their bestie and they love being in your company. Cats and their humans form super close bonds and certain breeds especially can act a little more clingy (like the canines) around the home – Sphynx, Ragdolls and Maine Coons are renowned socialites. If your cat is simply following you because they love being in your presence, be sure you’re giving them plenty of attention, cuddles and playtime to keep that bond strong.

Yes, a lot of cats do love their alone time, but equally, some are just more comfortable walking in their human’s shadow, and we think it’s quite simply adorable.
