Why do cats roll in dust?

Cats have a number of odd habits, but as notoriously clean animals, why is it that cats often choose to roll in dirt and dust?

There are actually a number of reasons why cats choose to roll in dust, and they’re not the only animals. Dogs often do the same!

So let’s find out why –

  1. Cats roll in dirt to cool down – we as humans may not grasp the concept. But with all that fur, animals find different ways to cool down and rolling is one of them. If they roll in freshly dug dirt, it’s often quite moist and they use this to cool down their temperature by rolling the moisture on their skin and fur.
  2. Marking their territory – cats have developed many ways to mark their territory, and they may choose rolling in dust as one of them. One of the most effective ways to scent mark is by rolling using their whole body to spread their scent.
  3. To scratch and itch – another reason cats might roll in dirt is to reach an itch they can’t get to with their paws. This is perfectly normal, but if you do get a sense that your cat is rolling and itching excessively, always call your vet for advice.
  4. Good for the gut – cats may be choosing to roll to aid their digestion, genius! Rolling in dirt covers your cat in bacteria from the soil and when ingested during grooming, these bacteria contribute to the good bacteria in their gut and aid the digestive process.
  5. Your cat is in season – if you notice your female cat rolling more often, it could be that she is in heat if she hasn’t been neutered. It’s their way of flirting to attract a mate. Rolling can be seen as submissive in the cat world.
  6. Pure joy – a content and relaxed cat might simply choose to roll in the dirt out of pure joy. Cats showing their belly is often a sign they feel super safe. So rolling in dust might simply be their way of expressing their happiness.

Dust baths may seem like a pretty odd choice for our clean little cats, but it’s a natural behaviour that can serve a number of purposes. Plus it is pretty darn cute to watch them roll around!
