Which flowers are safe for my cat?

Read time: 2 mins

With Spring well and truly springing, it really is the season to get out in the fresh Spring air and bring home some blooms to brighten up the indoors. If flowers are your thing, it’s essential cat-parent knowledge to know which flowers are safe for your cat, and which may pose a danger to your outside adventurer.

It really is as simple as having a quick checklist to refer to when picking out your posy, so next time a beautiful bouquet arrives at your door, you’ll know whether or not it’s safe to be inside your home, in paws-length of your favourite furball.

Unfortunately, some of our most loved stems really can do some damage to our four-pawed pals. Some even being fatal if consumed. As pretty as they might look in your favourite vase, the following flowers are best avoided by you and your cat. Of course, some outdoor cats roam free and it’s impossible to know exactly what they get up to. But if you do spot any of these in the outside world, try and keep your kitty cat away where possible.

The Flower No-No’s:

Slightly toxic, these blooms may cause tummy upset and skin irritation so are best avoided –

Alstroemeria / The Peruvian Lily
Eryngium / Sea Holly
Bupleurum / Thorow Wax
September / Aster
Solidago / Goldenrods

The Flower No Way’s:

Totally toxic, some of these can even be deadly if ingested by your cat so it’s best to keep them out of your home altogether –

Astrantia / Masterwort
Campanula bells / Bell Flower
Clematis
Craspedia / Billy Buttons, Woollyheads
Delphinium / Larkspur
Eucalyptus
Asparagus Fern
Lavender
Lilies
Ornithogalum / Star of Bethlehem
Ranunculus / Buttercups
Ruscus / Butcher’s Broom
Peonies
Senecio
Solomio
Sweet William
Tulip

The Friendly Flowers:

All of the following flowers are totally moggy safe, so you can fill your house with colour and not worry too much about the cat –

Astilbe
Erica / Heather
Freesia
Greenbell
Lisianthus / Texas Bluebell
Limonium / Sea Lavender
Olive
Pitto
Pussy willow
Roses (Queen Rue has been especially partial to nibbling on roses in the past)
Snapdragons
Statice
Stock
Trachelium / Blue Throatwort
Veronica / Speedwell
Sunflowers
Waxflower

So whilst we’re definitely not the petal police and are all for filling your home with spring stems, we do want to remind the cat people out there to be careful during flower season. Before you bring any through your door, be sure the flowers are safe for your cat.
