The UK has finally seen some sunshine, which means spring is coming! And with spring comes spring cleaning. And if you’re a cat owner, you’ll know that at the start of spring, you can see an increase in floof balls around your house as we approach warmer weather. Spring cleaning with your cat can come with its challenges, so we’ve gathered some handy tips to help structure your routine and keep your home squeaky clean!
Routine
We know too well how much our favourite felines love routine. So, to get your cat used to cleaning, consistency is key! Sticking to a schedule for your spring cleaning will keep your cat calm and stress-free, whilst their environment might not be quite as it usually is.
Grooming
Although cats are the kings and queens of cleaning themselves, keeping on top of regular grooming will ensure their coat stays in immaculate condition whatever the season. Spring means shedding season for cats, getting rid of that excess coat that keeps them extra toasty through the winter. Brushing them regularly will help pull out the stray fur and mean fewer hairballs around the house. Cats can get easily matted during winter, where they spend longer periods snoozing and have a little extra in the fur department. So, extra brushing in spring will help untangle any knots and get them ready for the climbing temperature. Side note: some cats struggle with being brushed, so be sure to offer lots of encouragement with their favourite treats and maybe a sprinkle of catnip to soothe their stress.
Changing Litter
As we mentioned, cats love a tidy home, and this especially extends to their toilet facilities. Changing your cat’s litter regularly will ensure there are no protest pees outside the box if the cleanliness isn’t up to standard. You should aim to change their litter once a week, completely getting rid of what’s in the tray. Be sure to wash and rinse the tray itself before topping it up with fresh litter for ultimate cleanliness, your cat will more than appreciate it!
Cleaning Products
It’s super important to choose cleaning products for your home that are safe for your four-legged friend. Lots of cleaning products include ingredients that are too strong and toxic for our cats, so be sure to look out for this. Strong chemicals can also trigger environmental allergies. Some cat-safe brands to look out for are:
- Ecover
- Method
- Delphis Eco
- Zoflora
If you do need to use any stronger cleaning products, be sure your cat is well away and that your windows are open to keep the fresh air flowing. We recommend closing the door of the room you’re cleaning to keep snooping cats safe and storing any harmful products securely away from prying paws.
Hoover
The hoover is likely to be your best friend if you have a cat at home. Vacuuming makes cleaning your cat’s favourite spots super easy, especially cosy nooks and their scratch post! As well as hoovering, though, we can’t praise the lint roller enough. An essential item for cat parents, no matter how hardcore your spring cleaning may be, you’ll almost always be leaving home with a few stray hairs on your favourite outfit. So we advise keeping a lint roller on your person at all times to tackle the flyaways!
Fresh bedding
This one might get tricky if your cat is particularly possessive over their sacred snoozing spot, but cleaning their bedding from time to time is important for hygiene and cleanliness. Freshen up their bedding by simply popping it in the washing machine and using pet-safe detergent. A pre-hoover may be necessary to keep your washing machine functioning, fur free!
