How to have a cat-safe BBQ in summer

Read time: 1 min

As it slowly starts to warm up and the sun is beginning to shine, us Brits can’t help but to get planning the next BBQ. But if you’re a cat parent, making sure you’re hosting a cat-safe gathering is essential when it comes to BBQ season.

What to consider for a cat-safe BBQ

1. Secure the flames
– BBQs have to be strictly off-limits to the felines. We don’t need to go into depth of the dangers of cats and open flames, so be sure to never leave your BBQ unattended. Our best advice would be to keep your cat safely indoors if you’re planning an outdoor cook-off. And even when the flames are out and the grill is cooling, it’s best to keep them away and avoid any singed whiskers.

2. No nibbles – Don’t lure them in with scraps and leftovers. Of course, it’s tempting to feed your tabby the odd offcut here and there, or the last lonely sausage, but it’s best avoided. The opportunity for extra snacks will keep them coming back for more, in a potentially dangerous situation. Human food also isn’t ideal for our felines. BBQs often involve foods like onions and garlic which don’t go down well with our kittens. Tasty treats for pud like chocolate can be equally dangerous and even leaving alcohol lying around is unsafe in case your cat tastes a tipple or two.

3. Safe space – Like we said, keeping your cat safe and secured inside is your best bet. Some of our floofs are often thrown by the arrival of strangers too, so setting up a safe space inside for them to keep their cool and relax will give you and them peace of mind.

4. Limit your sun worshipper – We all know cats love to bathe in the glory of the summer sun, but keeping tabs on this is really important. If you have feline BBQ guests and they do join you in the garden, keep an eye on how much sun they’re getting. Cats can get sunburn and sunstroke just like us and can get easily dehydrated. Encourage them into some snoozy shade from time to time and even look at investing in cat-safe suncream for those adorable little snoots.

We don’t want to sound like the ultimate fun sponge, but in order to live your best summer BBQ life, it’s safer for everyone to keep the felines inside.
