Can cats eat bread?

Read time: 1 mins

One of our ultimate favourite human treats, the smell of freshly baked bread can not be beaten in our eyes. But is the carby cloud of goodness ok to feed your cat? Bread doesn’t seem like an obvious choice for our obligate carnivores, but is it alright to slip your cat a couple of breadcrumbs or share your sarnie?

Similar to lots of our human foods, a teeny little bit of bread shouldn’t do your cat any harm. This isn’t to say it should become a daily staple, but a little nibble of your baguette shouldn’t cause your furry any problems. Bread doesn’t provide your friend with any of their required nutrients, but equally doesn’t contain anything harmful for the felines. It’s essentially empty calories that they don’t need to live a healthy life. In short, can your cat eat bread? Yes, but only as a small treat if they so crave the carbs.

There is one way bread can come in useful when it comes to our pals on all fours, and that’s as a handy disguise for medication. If your floof requires a pill that’s a little too hard to swallow and will opt to spit out even wrapped in ham, a little bit of loaf can be a great way to hide medicine and trick your tricky patient.

Another thing to consider if your cat really wants a bite of the good stuff is to stick to plain baked bread only. Flavoured breads may contain ingredients like garlic or onion which can be toxic to cats, so steer clear of the herbs and spices, strictly no garlic girls. To be honest, there really is no need for your cat to tuck into the ciabatta, but we know all too well those puss-in-boots eyes that beg for snacks from under the table. If you must give in, really do so only on occasion, and in teeny tiny cat sized bites. If your cat suffers from any sort of illness or disease or follows a strict diet, medical or otherwise, then ditch the dough and stick to what they know!
