The Best Microchip Cat Flaps

Read time: 1.5 mins

We recently wrote an article all about the importance of microchipping your furry friends as soon as you can. It’s the best option for their safety through life and making sure they always get back to you! But it also serves another purpose. If your outdoor wanderer has a tendency to paw endlessly at the door to let in and out, microchipping could be key. Microchip cat flaps have entered the chat.

This wonderful invention uses the technology in your cat’s microchip to recognise it’s them waiting at the door. Rather than a constant battle between you and your pal, opening the door over and over again, you could just get a cat flap that does it for you. Genius. And whilst it may take your cat a little while to get used to their new portal to the outdoors, we think it’s a complete winner.

Here’s a list of our top microchip cat flaps of varying budgets, if you think this might be your next move!

The Investment:

SureFlap – at £231 we’re starting with the big bucks. And although it sounds like an awful lot of money to spend on a cat flap, this one really does come with all the extras. Wifi link and app-controlled with notifications letting you know your cat has come home. It even uses dual scan technology that allows you to set different exit permissions for different cats, this model could be ideal for multi-cat households. Convinced yet?

The Multi-cat:

PetSafe – at £120, our next pick is half the price but still a great option with some clever tech. This model can store up to 25 different cats and has an integrated timer that can be set to lock and unlock at different times throughout the day, if you don’t want your little one venturing out at night for example.

Cheap and Cheerful:

SureFlap – another winner from SureFlap at a much more reasonable price point of £69.99. Much more simple, this model requires batteries to run and simply recognises your cat’s microchip to unlock, without the extra fancies. We did notice this hilarious pre-purchase warning on the description though – This product is not suitable for Clever/Aggressive Cats – you have been warned!

Closer Pets – another cheaper model at £59.95, a no-brainer if you just want to control when your cat can go in and out, that comes well-reviewed by its customers!
