Just like our flower article, it’s super important as a cat parent to know which houseplants are safe for your cat to be around at home. Luckily there are plenty, so you can still fill your home with lots of green babies, as well as furry ones. Cats tend to be a little over-adventurous and won’t hesitate to take a nibble of a leaf or two. Making sure your plants are non-toxic to cats is essential.
Here’s a great list of some popular plants that are definitely safe for your housemate:
- Boston Fern
- Kentia Palm
- Spider Plant
- Dwarf Banana Plant
- String of Hearts
- Calathea/Zebra Plant
- Venus Fly Trap
- Ponytail Palm
- Money Tree
- Polka Dot Plant
A simple google down at the garden centre usually does the trick if you’re unsure whether a plant is safe or not, but this list is a great go-to if you’re looking to stock up on some stems. Some of the most popular house plants are actually some of the most toxic to our feline. Be sure to avoid both Snake Plants and Monsteras when trying to achieve the most Pinterest-worthy, leafy interiors. It just isn’t worth it. Any type of Lillies are also top of the list to avoid, an absolute no-go when it comes to the cats. Keep these out of your home as they are extremely toxic.
If you’re worried your cat has sampled something they shouldn’t have, be sure to get to your vet straight away. Drooling and vomiting are good signs to let you know something isn’t right, and depending on the plant your cat could seem a little ‘drunk’ if they’ve ingested something toxic. It’s always better to be safe and seek your vet’s advice if you’re unsure.
