Saturday Morning Coffee with Joanne

Read time: 3 mins

Our favourite time of the week, we got talking to Joanne all about her weekend routine and her Cats Protection babies Mitzii and Crow.

So tell us your story, how did you become a two-cat family?

My old boy Tim had sadly taken his trip over the rainbow bridge and we were feeling a little couch potato-less. Zen, our dog, was bereft at having no ears to wash or butts to sniff. We decided to call Cats Protection who had 2 orphan kittens. They had been found at only 3 weeks and were very ill. The charity did an amazing job and nursed them up to 12 weeks. Then it was our turn, we adopted them after falling in love (despite them both being a bit feral). They’re still young at only 18 months!

They sound adorable, and their names are amazing. Do they have any other nicknames you like to call them?
Mittsy Moo and Floof, Crow is a little shaggier than Mitzii hence Floof.

Whereabouts do you all live and what do you do for work?
We live all the way out in rural Devon on a farm, so the cats live the country life. I’m actually registered as disabled so I don’t work. If I did work though, my dream job would be fostering cats.

Oh, you’re definitely our kind of person! So what about Saturdays, do you have a usual routine and what do you look forward to at the weekend?
My girls try to wake me on and off for breakfast starting from about 5 am, no lie-ins for me! They’ll only stop once I’ve given in and got up and then the rest of a Saturday morning is usually filled with cat cuddles, coffee, breakfast and reading.

If you’re ever in a treat yourself mood over the weekend what do you do, or what would you treat the cats to?
For me, I’d definitely pick up some chocolate and watch a musical movie. A cosy night in for sure. For the cats, they absolutely love cardboard cat scratchers, so I like to pick those up when they deserve a treat.

We love a sustainable treat. Have you always been a cat person through and through?
No, I was a dog person actually and didn’t start coming around to cats until 35 years ago. Then there was no going back!

And now you are a cat person, what’s the coolest cat person item you have in your home?
I’d have to say my giant cat tree. It screams cat person, is as tall as the room and Mitzii and Crow adore it.

Other than hanging out on the cat tree, do the girls live life to any sort of schedule?
Not exactly but they definitely do take over. Zen the dog definitely loses out a little and the girls tend to come first even though I don’t have favourites… Good thing he absolutely adores them and has basically been their surrogate Mum.

Too adorable. Last question, are they any sneaky snacks you feed the cats that you maybe shouldn’t?
Funnily enough, dog biscuits! Zen losing out even on his own treats, poor guy.
