If you’re wondering about microchipping your cat and what it entails, then this article is for you. Read on to find out how to microchip your cat and why it’s so important.

Why should I microchip my cat?

Most vets will recommend microchipping your furball on their very first visit. It’s so important and should be top of your list when you have a new cat in your life. The chip contains all of your important details and gives your new pal the best opportunity to get back to you.

Are microchips compulsory?

The short answer is not yet. However new legislation from the gov states all cats must be microchipped by 10/06/2024. Failure to chip your chum could result in a fine of up to £500. It’s a great step to keeping all cats that bit safer.

How do microchips work?

The super smart technology is built into a teeny chip. The vet will insert this under your cat’s skin, basically like a big injection which causes no harm. The chip then lives in your cat with its own unique code. Should your cat go missing, they can be scanned for their chip. This will pull up all of your details and hopefully make that beautiful reunion quick and easy.

Is microchipping expensive?

We know when it comes to the vets things can get pretty costly. But with microchips being so essential. Luckily the cost is relatively low and usually no more than £30. This one-time payment means your cat is covered for life, the only extras you may have to pay for is changing your details if you move house. But this will vary depending on the chip company.

Once my cat is microchipped, do I need to do anything else?

As soon as your cat is chipped, your vet should pass on paperwork so you can input all of your details to link up to their chip. This is super important and should be done asap, and always remember to update your information if you have a change of contact details or address.

Microchipping your four-legged friend really is so important, and soon to be a legal requirement for all cat parents. Get it done as soon as you can in order to keep your cat as safe as possible. It doesn’t hurt, and will give you peace of mind should your cat wander a little too far. Microchipping gives you both the best chance of finding each other again.
