Cat eye boogers and discharge – What’s normal?

Read time: 1.5 mins

Crusty morning eyes, eye boogers, watery eyes and more. We wanted to find out what’s normal and what isn’t when it comes to your cat’s eyes. Cat eye discharge can be pretty gross, but it’s important to recognise what could be a sign your pal is unhealthy and what is totally normal.

Watery eyes

Tears are totally normal. Cats, just like humans, produce tears all through the day and these can often spill over onto their furry cheeks and cause the watery-eyed look. This can be increased if something has caused irritation to your cat’s eyes. If you notice your furry one’s eyes have become particularly watery of late, calling your vet for advice is the best option.

Breed specific boogers

Certain breeds are much more prone to watery eyes and boogers. Flat-faced breeds such as Persians, with big beautiful eyes and short noses, do tend to be more susceptible to excess eye discharge. This is totally normal unless you notice it becoming excessive.

Unusual cat eye discharge

If your cat’s eye boogers are looking a little more unusual in colour than the regular morning crust, this could indicate something more serious. Yellow or green looking discharge is cause for concern and definitely requires a vet appointment to make sure your cat’s eyesight is safe and their health is on top form. Don’t delay a vet call when it comes to eyes and sight, many things can be behind the unusual boogers such as ulcers or conjunctivitis, so your vet will need to get to the root of the problem and take care of those big beautiful eyes.

Keeping the peepers clean

To help the furries out, wiping your floof’s eyes down with a damp soft cloth daily will keep their eyes bright and clean and hopefully keep away any nasties causing irritation. It could be as simple as dust or hairs causing problems in there, so a scheduled pamper should ensure the boogers are kept at bay – most of them will no doubt adore the extra fuss and attention!
