How to keep your cat calm during firework season

Read time: 1.5 mins

With Diwali, Halloween, Bonfire Night and New Year falling so closely together in the calendar, it can be a super stressful time for your cherubs once the fireworks start flowing. And whilst we can’t unfortunately explain that the terrifyingly loud bangs and scattering lights in the sky outside are in fact nothing to be scared of and pose no threat, there are a few things we can do to try to soothe our furry friends and get them through the sparkly season.

Here are 5 tips to help keep your cat safe and calm during fireworks:

  1. Cats associate loud noises with a not so friendly environment, so naturally the whoosh crash bangs we stand to admire can be a small cause for concern for nervous kittens. Keeping your cat safe and snuggly indoors (especially those city dwellers) and providing a cosy corner where they can curl up helps to keep their mind at ease.
  2. Making sure your pal is chipped goes without saying. Keeping their microchip details up to date is also super important to give them the best possible chance of getting home, should they decide to dart.
  3. Maybe think twice about letting off your own rockets when you can have just as good an evening without the sparkles in the sky. Fireworks in general are pretty unavoidable, and there’ll always be that neighbour attempting to outdo themselves year after year. But if you are a cat parent, we say ditch the Catherine wheels and prioritise your pet at this time of the year.
  4. A great bonus extra for chilling out the tabbies can be found in calming spot on treatment or a plug in diffuser. They both use natural ingredients and pheromones to promote feelings of reassurance and wellbeing for your little ones. A helping hand in boosting the zen in your home.
  5. If you do opt for a sky show, or know it’s likely from nearby neighbours, try playing some firework noises on your speaker or on the TV in the lead up. Granted not the most relaxing background playlist, but even on a low volume it can help desensitise your mog before the big events.

We hope these handy tips help keep your kitten calm, and both cats and humans alike can enjoy the spooky season through to New Years, and all the festivities that go with it.
