How long do cats sleep?

Read time: 1 min

Cats – they really are some of the sleepiest souls on the planet, we can’t help but think – what a way to live. Being fed delicious meals, living rent-free, with nothing more to worry about then their next nap location. But how long do our cats really sleep for in a day and why exactly are they so tired?

Average hours per day cats sleep

On average, cats get a whopping 15 hours of sleep a day, with some even managing 20 – quite the achievement! Certain factors like age or the weather can also make a difference to sleeping patterns. If your cat is less adventurous in the cold for example, they may rack up even more hours of indoor snooze than usual. Teeny kittens will also spend most of their days sleeping, but once they turn teenage and their energy levels increase, you’ll have a much more active kitty that may last through their adult years. Much like with us humans, as our cats age and they wind down into senior life and retirement, you’ll start to notice the need for naps increasing again as an Old Age Pussycat.

Why do cats sleep so much (recharging the furry batteries)

Although their sleeping schedule may seem extreme, the super snoozers have perfected their power naps over time to be the best hunters they can be. Not so essential for our now domesticated friends, their wild cat ancestors and big cat cousins, who rely on successful hunts to survive, have developed such sleeping patterns to be sure their batteries are fully recharged before they’re out on the prowl for the next meal. And although our fluff balls live the high life with dinner presented on a platter at meal times, napping truly is in their nature.

In our most recent poll on Instagram, 99% of you guessed correctly, that our kitties do on average sleep for longer than 10 hours a day… Turns out we do know our moggies inside and out!
